Hello friends and families,
Welcome back! We’ve officially reached the end of our first weekend together. By the end of next weekend, everyone will already be back home in Spain, so although we still have another weekend to come, this one feels a lot more significant. The time is flying by here, we blink and another dat has passed, so we’re determined to enjoy every minute and cram as much in as we can while we’re here in Ampleforth, so, as always, we had a packed schedule. After what, by our standards, felt like a very late breakfast at 9:00 a.m., it was straight into preparations for the evening. Our big event was the annual Ampleforth’s Got Talent show, so everyone split off into their groups to rehearse under the supervision of the staff. This entire group has been incredibly dedicated from day one, and that definitely showed. Whether their performance was big or small, serious or funny, everyone threw themselves into it completely, and it was lovely to see just how excited they all were to perform later that evening.
The weather didn’t exactly get off to the best start. We had a few showers throughout the morning, but thankfully by the afternoon everything had cleared up and the weather turned out to be perfect. It was a little cooler than we’ve been used to, so plenty of students grabbed a jumper before heading out, although most of them didn’t end up needing it because we had a big long excursion planned. Our afternoon activity was a walk to the lake here on campus. Ampleforth College is absolutely enormous. It’s around an hour and a half’s walk from where we’re staying to the lake, and you’re still entirely within the college grounds. That gives you a pretty good idea of just how huge this place really is. As always, we aim to make sure the students get plenty of fresh air, exercise and time outdoors, so it was a lovely walk and, by the time we made it back, everyone was thoroughly exhausted. Lunch was a barbecue in the garden, kindly prepared by the wonderful kitchen staff here at the college. Then, in the evening, we had another British classic: a traditional Sunday roast. This week’s version was roast pork served with vegetables, potatoes and plenty of rich gravy. Let’s just say the British have discovered that almost anything tastes better if you pour enough gravy over it.
Before we knew it, it was time for the main event of the evening: Ampleforth’s Got Talent.
First of all, I just want to say how incredibly proud we were of every single student. Not one person refused to perform. At their age, standing up in front of all your friends and putting yourself out there takes a huge amount of confidence, and everyone showed exactly that. Hopefully, when they look back on this camp years from now, they’ll be glad they pushed themselves outside their comfort zone. You usually only get a few chances to have experiences like this, and with such a kind, supportive group around them, it was the perfect opportunity to challenge themselves, build confidence and practise skills they’ll carry with them for years to come.
Every single performance was fantastic, but unfortunately there could only be three winners. We’re not made of prizes, after all.. In third place was Arnau, who gave a brilliantly original presentation about his passion for Dungeons & Dragons, using Canva to explain the game. It was such a unique idea that it really stood out and was a favourite with both the judges and the audience.
Second place went to Clàudia. G, Clàudia. C, Daniela, Elsa, Iria and Clàudia. M, who practiced for hours to show us all an amazing dance routine, and all that preparation really paid off. And finally, our winners of the evening were Hugo, Leo, Aina and Sergio, whose hilarious theatrical performance, complete with costumes, props and an incredible amount of preparation, completely won over both the judges and the audience. They were certainly one of the crowd favourites from the very beginning, and everyone was delighted to see them take first place. A huge congratulations to all of our winners, but an even bigger thank you goes to every single student for taking part with such a positive attitude. Everyone supported one another, celebrated each other’s performances and showed real sportsmanship throughout the evening. With such a large group, having everyone be so encouraging, humble and respectful really is something special. It has honestly been one of the smoothest and most enjoyable camps I can remember, and we feel incredibly lucky to be spending these days with such a fantastic group of students. Today, of course, is another action-packed day, but you’ll hear all about that in tomorrow’s blog post.
Thank you so much, as always, friends and families, for stopping by and reading the blog.
See you tomorrow!
