Hello friends and families,
First of all, I owe you all an absolutely massive, enormous, gigantic apology for not updating the blog over the last couple of days. Last week I kept saying how quickly the camp was flying by, and the final two days disappeared even faster than all the others, in a blink of an eye it was all over. So I’m really sorry about that. To make up for it, today’s blog is definitely the XXL edition, and there’ll be a huge photo dump to go with it as well.
So let’s rewind all the way back to Friday.
Friday began with our final classes of the camp. As always on swimming days, everyone had a shorter class because it was time for our last trip to the swimming pool. I’ve mentioned before how nice it’s been to watch the students become more confident every time we’ve gone swimming, and this time almost everybody got into the water. Better still, by the end they were complaining that they wanted to stay even longer, which I think says everything. I honestly think one of the nicest things about swimming is that, for once, all 58 students are together in exactly the same place. They’re already an incredibly sociable group, but this is one of the few moments where everyone is together at the same time, and they really seemed to enjoy being all together as a big huge group.
The final class is always a little different from the others. It’s a chance to look back over the camp, talk about everyone’s favourite moments, write messages in each other’s books and reflect on everything we’ve done together over the last eleven days. While one group was doing that, the other group was busy making friendship bracelets. Over the years we’ve built up quite an impressive collection of bracelet-making materials, and it’s one of those activities the students always love. So, if you happened to receive a bracelet as a present this weekend, you’re very welcome. I can assure you it was made with a lot of care, patience and affection. After that, we all gathered together in our favourite hall for a special diploma ceremony. Every student received their certificate while everyone else applauded and celebrated them. What made it even better was how seriously they all took it. It was funny, really sweet, and a lovely way to recognise everything they’d achieved throughout the camp.
That evening we returned to the hall for one final activity together. We held our annual photo challenge, recreating famous internet memes and silly photographs, before sitting down to watch all of the videos we’d made throughout the camp, including our lip dub. Hopefully you’ll all be able to see that very soon. I can’t promise exactly when because that’s out of my hands, but hopefully it won’t be long. We also handed out a few fun awards, and it turned into another brilliant evening together.
Saturday started with a slightly later breakfast before we tackled what is probably the most important activity of the whole camp: packing. We spent plenty of time making sure suitcases were organised, and most importantly, that nobody left anything behind. Even when we dedicate hours to it, there always seems to be one lonely sock or charger hiding somewhere, so we wanted to give ourselves the best chance possible to take absolutely everything with us. Once everything was packed away, it was time to prepare for the disco. Everyone decorated envelopes so they could write little messages to one another, along with making decorations for the evening. It’s become a really lovely tradition and gives everyone something special to take home besides the souvenirs.
We also had a completely unexpected surprise. The internationally renowned Maggini Quartet, who have taken an interest in our camp over the years, invited us to watch part of one of their rehearsals. Around four or five years ago they did something similar for one of our groups, and it left such a great impression that they’ve always asked how the camp has been getting on. This year Brian, the leader of the quartet, came to find us personally and insisted we spend twenty or thirty minutes listening to them rehearse. It was such a unique experience, and the students were incredibly respectful throughout. I’m fairly sure none of them expected world-class chamber music to be part of their summer camp, but I hope it’s something they’ll remember for a long time.
And then, before we knew it, it was time for the disco.
It’s always the moment we’ve all been building towards. Everyone looks forward to it all week, but at the same time everybody knows what comes afterwards. By the end of the night there are always plenty of hugs, quite a few tears and lots of promises to stay in touch. After spending almost two weeks together, it’s impossible not to get attached to the people around you.
Looking back now, every evening with this group has been special. Honestly, they’ve been one of the loveliest groups I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Every single day members of staff from across the college, from the kitchen team to the IT staff and everyone in between, stopped us to tell us how polite, friendly and respectful they had been.
A summer camp is only ever as good as the people who are part of it. We could have the best staff and activities in the world, but without students who are willing to throw themselves into everything, include one another and make the most of every opportunity, it simply wouldn’t work. This group did exactly that from the very first day until the very last. Everyone mixed together, nobody was left out, and there wasn’t even the slightest hint of bullying or bad feeling throughout the entire camp. As teachers, that’s really all we could ever ask for.
So from all of us, thank you. A huge thank you to every single student for making these past two weeks so memorable.
A huge thank you to:

Hola, amigos y familias:
