Hello friends and families,

Hello again! First of all, my deepest apologies for not updating the blog yesterday. All-day excursions always make for slightly hectic evenings once we get back, with us organising the night activity on a bit of a tight schedule, so I simply didn’t manage to find the time. Rather than giving you two separate blog posts, though, I thought I’d make up for it with one extra-long one instead. Friday was the last Friday we’ll ever spend together as this group, which is a slightly strange thing to say. We’re definitely reaching the point where we’re starting to have a lot of «lasts», and that’s a little bit sad. This group settled in at a record pace, they’ve become really close friends, and honestly they’ve been one of the least problematic groups that I can ever remember. We’re all very grateful to have spent this time with them, so we wanted to make our final Friday together a memorable one, like every day.

Friday also marked our final trip to the swimming pool together. Another last. Every group seems to develop its own little obsession during camp. Some love singing, some can’t get enough of Just Dance, but this group’s interest is definitely a love for the water. Both swimming sessions have absolutely flown by because they’ve spent every minute making the most of their time in the pool. We’d love to show you lots of photos of everyone swimming together, but the pool has a strict no-camera policy, so you’ll just have to take our word for it that everyone had an amazing time. Friday evening’s activity was our annual game of Cluedo. Basically, one member of staff had mysteriously disappeared from the camp, and every other member of staff became a suspect. The students had to travel all over the campus, interviewing suspects, gathering clues and trying to work out exactly who was responsible. It was another really fun evening, and afterwards we all headed into the PAC (preforming arts centre) room to go through the plans for Saturday’s big excursion, answer everyone’s questions and make sure we were all ready for an early start the next morning. Also on Friday, it was our good friend Ivette’s birthday. Thanks to her, the kitchen prepared a delicious birthday cake for everyone to enjoy as dessert after lunch. We’d all like to wish Ivette a very happy birthday, and we hope it was a really special day that she’ll remember for a long time.

Saturday was our big day out to Whitby. Even if you’ve never heard of it before, there’s a good chance you’ve come across it without realising. Whitby famously inspired Bram Stoker while he was writing Dracula, and it’s where Count Dracula first arrives in England in the novel. Many of the places we visited appear in the story, so the town has a really fascinating gothic atmosphere. At the same time, Whitby has another completely different side to it. Cross the bridge and suddenly you’re surrounded by beaches, ice cream, amusement arcades, sweet shops and little souvenir shops. It’s almost like two completely different towns joined together, and that’s part of what makes it such a fun place to visit. Whitby also has a fascinating maritime history. It grew into one of Britain’s most important whaling ports during the 18th century, and it’s also closely connected with Captain James Cook, who began his seafaring career there before going on to become one of Britain’s most famous explorers. After climbing the famous 199 Steps to visit the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey, which helped inspire Bram Stoker’s novel, we spent some time exploring the town and doing a bit of shopping. Whitby might not have quite the same range of shops as York, but what it does have is plenty of independent businesses full of local products and quirky souvenirs. So if your children come home with presents that are a little unusual, you’ll know exactly where it came from.

Everyone behaved brilliantly throughout the day and we had a fantastic time together. Back at camp, it was time for one of the biggest evening activities of the week: Games Night. Everyone started with ten points and then competed in a whole range of different games to earn as many more points as possible. Those points will become very important later in the week when they’re used in our big auction, where students can bid not only for prizes but also for lots of unique camp experiences that we keep as a surprise until the very end. As always, everyone was determined to earn as many points as they could, and many of the students even got dressed up for the occasion, making it another really fun evening to finish off an already brilliant day.

Today is, of course, our final Sunday together, and it’s a pretty big evening because it’s the World Cup final. For the last few matches we’ve been running alternative activities for the students who weren’t interested in football, watching films, playing games and making bracelets while the match was on. This time, though, I’ve been very loudly informed that every single student wants to watch the final, so for the first time we’ll all be watching it together. Hopefully it’ll be another really nice bonding experience, and, of course, we’re hoping everyone gets the result they’re wishing for. I’ve already been informed by every English member of staff here at the college that they’re all 100% supporting Spain tonight, so let’s hope everyone leaves happy. We’ll let you know exactly how it all goes tomorrow, with absolutely no delay this time.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by and reading the blog.
See you tomorrow.

Hola, amigos y familias:
