Hello friends and families,

Welcome back! Yesterday was our first full day together, which meant we could finally settle into camp life properly. We’ve got an incredibly packed schedule over the next eleven days, full of activities, excursions and plenty of surprises. At this point, the challenge isn’t thinking of things to do, it’s deciding which things we’re going to have to leave out. We’ll try to squeeze as much in as possible so everyone gets the most out of their summer here at Ampleforth. Yesterday was also our first proper day of classes and activities. Because we go swimming a couple of times during camp, the timetable works a little differently on those days. One group has a shorter morning of classes and activities before heading to the pool, then next time we go swimming the other group does the same. That way, by the end of camp, everyone has had exactly the same amount of classes and activities, just to make it fair for everyone. So while one group was in class getting to know each other, introducing themselves and getting started with their first English lessons, the other group spent the morning in our games room. It’s a brilliant space on campus that last week’s group only got to use on their very last day, but this time we’ve got access to it for the whole camp. It’s a great place to relax, play board games, spend some time together and, most importantly, practise a bit of English with their favourite monitors. The morning disappeared before we knew it because it was already time to head off to the swimming pool. We’ve still got a couple more swimming sessions to come, but it was a lovely start. With a group of 58 students, it was especially impressive that almost everyone got into the water and had a swim, even if it was only for a little while.

After lunch, it was time for the afternoon classes and activities. During the activity session, the students worked on a video challenge, filming some inspiration English-language videos that will be judged later in the week, with some fantastic prizes waiting for the winners. Meanwhile, the afternoon classes continued the first-day introductions but also got properly into the English lessons, so everyone was learning from the very beginning. Then, before we knew it, it was time for our evening activity: movie night. For the last few years we’ve kept up the tradition of watching a romantic teen comedy that was filmed right here at Ampleforth College. It might not be the greatest film ever made, but it’s always a big hit because the students get to recognise the dining hall, classrooms and lots of other places they’ve already spent a lot of time in. It’s not every day you get to watch an Amazon film that was shot where you’re actually staying, so it’s always a success in that way at least. Right at the end of the evening, we split everyone into their groups for today’s big trip to York. I’d love to start telling you all about York now because it’s one of the most interesting and beautiful places in the whole of England, in my humble opinion, and it’s packed with history and stories… but I’ll leave you in suspense for just a little bit longer. As I’m writing this, tonight’s activity is already underway, and I should probably be there instead of sitting here writing.

Thank you so much for stopping by and reading the blog once again.
Have a lovely weekend, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

(P.S. apologies for the lack of photos, I will update this post with more as soon as possible)

¡Hola, amigos y familias!
