Hello friends and families,
Welcome back once again! We’re now into our final week together, and although we’ve still got a good few days left, it’s becoming more obvious that the days are passing faster and faster. I know I probably sound like a broken record at this point, but every day seems to disappear at a more rapid pace than the last. Before we know it, it’ll be time to say our goodbyes, so we’re determined to make enjoy our time to the maximum. Monday meant a return to our usual routine of classes and activities. During their English lessons, the students worked through more units from the course book and also gave some really impressive presentations. Honestly, this generation is unbelievably good at making presentations in general. Give me five hours on a computer and I still couldn’t produce what some of them manage in half an hour on a mobile phone. Both teachers have been really impressed by the amount of effort everyone’s putting into class. The students have been using as much English as possible, throwing themselves into every activity and making the most of every opportunity to practise, which is exactly what we love to see. As always, while one group was in class, the other was taking part in the day’s activity. Yesterday it was time to film our annual lip dub. Every camp we put together a music video around the campus, with everyone dressing up, learning a few dance routines and generally showing off the beautiful surroundings while having a good laugh together. It’s always one of the highlights of the camp, and hopefully I’ll be able to share the finished video with you very soon, so keep an eye out for that soon.
For lunch we had chicken and rice, a meal that’s become a real favourite here in Britain thanks to the country’s large Caribbean, and especially Jamaican, community. British food sometimes gets an unfair reputation, but one of the best things about modern Britain is just how many different cuisines have become part of everyday life. The kitchen team here work incredibly hard to provide a varied menu every day, and there’s always plenty of choice, including a salad bar, fresh fruit and alternatives for anyone who doesn’t fancy the main meal. They’re also always happy to help if somebody has a particular dietary need or simply isn’t keen on something. They’ve been absolutely brilliant with us throughout the camp, and we’re very grateful for everything they do behind the scenes.
Dinner was spaghetti bolognese with garlic bread, which, judging by the number of students going back for seconds, turned out to be a very popular choice. Growing children seem to have bottomless stomachs, especially after a full day of classes, activities and running around campus, so it’s always nice to see everyone eating well and keeping their energy up.
After a little bit of well-earned free time, it was off to one of the most beautiful rooms on campus for our evening activity: Quiz Night. If you saw yesterday’s blog, it’s the spectacular old hall with the enormous carved wooden doors. It’s an incredible place to spend an evening, and we feel very lucky to be able to use it. The quiz covered everything from music and films to geography and flags. Since it was all in English, it definitely wasn’t easy at times. Some students may never have needed the word liquorice before yesterday, but I’m fairly confident they’ll remember it from now on. And that’s exactly the point: learning plenty of new English while having fun at the same time. Congratulations go to the team The Alternatives, who came out on top after a brilliant performance throughout the quiz. It was really lovely to watch what happened afterwards too. The winners of the talent show went straight over to congratulate the quiz champions, shook their hands and celebrated with them. It was a small moment, but it summed this group up perfectly. There’s a real sense of camaraderie here. Despite the wide mix of personalities and ages, everyone gets along incredibly well, supports one another and celebrates each other’s successes. It’s genuinely refreshing to see, and it honestly gives us a lot of hope for the future. Watching how naturally this group mixes, includes one another and avoids judging people has been one of the nicest parts of this camp. So that was our Monday! Today, of course, we’ve got another packed schedule waiting for us, and I’ll tell you all about that tomorrow.
Thank you so much, as always, for stopping by and reading the blog.
See you soon!

Hola, amigos y familias:
